Safety Day, Drag Racing and a Tour!
Saturday, April 16, members and guests of the Hub City Model A Ford Club met for the club’s 2016 kickoff tour and Safety Day. Safety day is a time to inspect and bring our cars up to a safer level in preparation for the year’s touring season. Work performed included front wheel bearings being repacked, a carburetor being replaced, ignition timing adjustments on various vehicles, and checking for properly tightened lug nuts. After our safety inspections and adjustments, everyone headed to our local Mason Dixon Dragway east of Hagerstown. The track really put out the welcome mat for our club including their track announcer chattering non-stop about our cars and drag racing. There was a youth dragster division present when we pulled in, and there were lots of waves and smiles from them when they saw our old iron passing by. We competed among ourselves and while several ran just for fun. That’s where you run at your own pace just to get your computer generated bragging rights ticket showing your ET, reaction time, top speed etc. Then you can say you ran your A at the drags. Drivers got a chance to feel what it is like when you watch drag racing on TV. Lining up at the “Christmas tree”, as the starting lights are affectionately called, then watch the lights blink down yellow, yellow, yellow, yellow, “green”, travel down the track, and then come back the return lane to collect your printout with your run info on it for a souvenir. Warren and Kent provided plenty of competitive spirit, racing each other several times, and even swapping cars to see if it was the “car or driver,” that allowed Kent’s pickup to win every race against Warren’s coupe – EXCEPT ONE. After leaving the drag strip the group headed for Middletown MD and the Main Cup Restaurant for a very nice lunch. One last stop before turning our 80+ year old A’s toward the barn for the day was a trip into Boonsboro for a dip of our favorite flavor of cool, creamy treat that seems so popular with Model A’ers – why, ice cream of course.
Hub City Model A Ford Club held our annual Christmas dinner at the Savoy restaurant. The entertainment by the Dominion 4 was enjoyed by all.
